I was an absolute fiend on FIFA 15 but always wanted to be ‘different’. That being said, even I had to relent and buy Seydou Doumbia.
Which secretly annoyed me as I came up against him practically every Ultimate Team game there was, but over time, it was just undeniable how broken this guy was to use.
Not because he had a massive rating. Not because he cost millions of coins. Just because you already knew what sort of game you were about to have.

You’d load into a match, see an affordable sweaty Premier League hybrid with Gervinho somewhere on the wing, Ibarbo lurking nearby and then there he was sitting up front. At that point you almost accepted what was coming.
Balls over the top. Defenders getting bullied. Pace causing complete chaos.
For a lot of FIFA players, Doumbia felt less like a striker and more like a ship cannon.
Why Seydou Doumbia Was So Good On FIFA 15
On paper, Seydou Doumbia naturally looked dangerous.
His pace was ridiculous and his physical stats were strong enough to make him difficult to knock off the ball. But FIFA players know that stats alone never tell the whole story because every year there are players who somehow perform far beyond what the numbers suggest.
Doumbia was one of those players on FIFA 15, and the surviving lore is resounding on that matter.
Everything about him seemed to work perfectly with FIFA 15’s gameplay. His acceleration felt explosive, his movement constantly stretched defences and once he got into space there was usually only one outcome.
The frustrating thing was he didn’t even need much space either. One slightly mistimed tackle or one through ball played a second too late and suddenly he was gone.
Especially fort a game engine where natural running pace and pace while running with the ball were ridiculously indecipherable.
Why FIFA 15 Players Loved Seydou Doumbia
Ultimate Team players have always loved value. Especially before the FIFA Points era.
People want expensive players eventually, but they love finding somebody who performs like a superstar without costing superstar money. Doumbia became exactly that.
He gave people access to elite-level performance for a fraction of the price.
That’s why you saw him absolutely everywhere. Weekend League didn’t exist yet, but online seasons and Ultimate Team felt packed with him.
The strange thing is players weren’t using him because they were fans of Seydou Doumbia in real life either. They were using him because they wanted to win. And that’s all that mattered on FUT.
What Happened To Seydou Doumbia In Real Life?
The funny thing is Doumbia actually had a pretty decent career outside of FIFA as well.
He was brilliant for CSKA Moscow and built a reputation as a reliable goalscorer, which is why bigger moves eventually followed. But his real-life career never reached the superstar level FIFA players probably imagined while watching him score hat-tricks every other game.
That’s usually how these FIFA cult heroes work.
Real football remembers Seydou Doumbia as a very good striker with a respectable career, but who never quite hit the heights many expected, while FIFA 15 players remember somebody capable of ruining an entire evening in about six in-game minutes. Maybe seven.
