Samuel Eto’o: A Hero’s Career in Football Shirts (1997-2015)

Samuel Eto’o, one of the greatest strikers of his generation, has had a storied career that spans multiple top European clubs and international success. And the football shirts to match!

How good was Samuel Eto’o?

His journey is marked by numerous iconic football shirts that tell the story of his incredible achievements and contributions to the game. Let’s take a look at the most memorable shirts Eto’o has worn and the milestones he achieved in each.

Real Madrid (1997-2000)

Yes, Samuel Eto’o did play for Real Madrid.

I know!

We spoke previously about the Galacticos era numerous times here at Hobby FC, and Samuel Eto’o is one of many unfortunate (however you want to look at it) young stars to be overlooked by the commercial focus of the club during this time.

Although his time with Los Blancos was limited and he made only a handful of appearances, the experience provided a crucial foundation for his future success. Real Madrid’s white shirt symbolizes the starting point of his professional journey, even if he didn’t get the chance to shine there.

As a result, shirts are hard to come by and are largely not very sought-after, either!

RCD Mallorca (2000-2004)

Who needs Real Madrid, am I right?

It was at the seaside club of Mallorca that Eto’o truly began to make his mark. As a side note, if you’re looking for more football clubs (like RCD Mallorca) located by a beach, then check this article here.

Wearing the vibrant red shirt, he became a key player for the team, scoring 54 goals in 133 appearances, and establishing himself as one of the most explosive strikers in the league

His performances helped Mallorca secure their first major trophy, the Copa del Rey, in 2003.

Eto’o’s time at Mallorca showcased his potential and made him one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe, and as a result his shirt was regularly produced and fairly priced in today’s market. A rough estimate of around £80 would snag you a deal for a nicely-preserved Mallorca stop with Eto’o-9.

FC Barcelona (2004-2009)

Things should start to feel more familiar now…

Eto’o’s move to Barcelona marked the beginning of his golden era.

Donning the Blaugrana shirt, he became one of the most lethal strikers in the world. Eto’o scored 130 goals in 199 appearances, helping Barcelona to win three La Liga titles, two UEFA Champions League trophies, and a Copa del Rey. All during the trough of Real Madrid’s ‘Galactico’ era, too!

Oh, that team with Deco, Ronaldinho and Eto’o will live long in the memory!

His goals in the Champions League finals of 2006 and 2009 were crucial in securing those titles, cementing his legacy at the club. And thumbing his nose to Madrid at the same time.

Shirts here are vastly produced, but you need to watch out for fakes with this one – as such you’re better off with a partner like The Soccer Archive to navigate these murky waters.

Inter Milan (2009-2011)

And then Pep Guardiola came in and decided to bring some academy graduates in his place – leaving senior players like Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto’o to seek employment elsewhere.

After leaving Barcelona, Eto’o joined Inter Milan, where he continued his success.

In the black and blue shirt of Inter, Eto’o played a pivotal role in the club’s historic treble-winning season in 2009-2010, under the management of José Mourinho. Eto’o’s versatility and relentless work ethic helped Inter win the Serie A, Coppa Italia, and the UEFA Champions League.

He scored 53 goals in 102 appearances for the club, becoming a hero for the Nerazzurri fans. Weirdly, this would be one of the last times we would associate his name with the famous number 9…

Chelsea (2013-2014)

Samuel Eto’o’s journey continued in the Premier League with Chelsea.

Although his stint in London was brief, wearing the blue shirt of Chelsea, he made memorable contributions, including a hat-trick against Manchester United in 2014.

Ironic that he even joined at all having once said that he’d never join!

Eto’o helped Chelsea secure important victories during the season, showcasing his enduring quality and experience. But it was clear that his powers were beginning to diminish.

Hence why the value in his shirts start to follow that same downward trend.

Everton (2014-2015)

Again, short-lived and even fewer things to say.

You’ll notice that I stop here, even though Samuel Eto’o did play for a few more different clubs after this, but honestly from a shirts perspective, that’s probably for the best.

We can move internationally though, because that’s still very desirable indeed.

Cameroon National Team (1997-2014)

Throughout his club career, Eto’o was a stalwart for the Cameroon national team.

Wearing the iconic green, red, and yellow shirt, he led Cameroon to two Africa Cup of Nations titles (2000, 2002) and an Olympic gold medal in 2000. Eto’o remains Cameroon’s all-time top scorer, and his contributions to the national team have made him a national hero.

He himself admitted at the time of qualifying for the 2006 World Cup that he intended to follow in the footsteps of Cameroonian legend, Roger Milla.

Not only did he do that, but he surpassed it!

Summary

Samuel Eto’o’s career is a testament to his extraordinary talent, versatility, and determination. Each football shirt he wore represents a chapter of success, growth, and memorable achievements.

From his early days at Real Madrid to his legendary status at Barcelona and Inter Milan, and his international heroics with Cameroon, Eto’o’s journey through football shirts tells the story of one of the game’s greatest strikers.
