An Honest Review of the Jermain Defoe Documentary (2024)

The Jermain Defoe documentary on Amazon Prime is a captivating and heartfelt journey through the life and career of one of football’s most prolific strikers.

From his early days at West Ham to his heroics at Tottenham Hotspur and his international exploits with England, this documentary covers it all with a perfect blend of excitement and emotion.

The less said about his controversial move away from West Ham, the better.

But even then, it was brilliant to get that insight from the people who actually lived through it rather than those reporting on it – as it highlights the telling difference between the two. In fact, it’s probably my favourite, and most juicy part of the entire Jermain Defoe documentary.

The documentary excels in its storytelling, weaving together interviews, match footage, and personal anecdotes that paint a vivid picture of Defoe’s dedication and passion for the game.

It’s not just about the goals and accolades but also about the challenges, sacrifices, and perseverance that define his career. As well as that of the people who supported him.

What sets the Jermain Defoe documentary apart is its deep dive into Defoe’s personal life – as well as getting a good portrait of what he’s like on different viewpoints from the people who know him best.

Viewers get an intimate look at his relationships with family, friends, and mentors, showcasing the man behind the footballer. The segments on his charitable work are particularly moving and inspirational – and show something in football which isn;t talked about enough.

Use the case of Andre Onana of Manchester United.

He has a foundation which has been providing support for millions of people in Africa, and yet all anyone can talk about is his lower moments at Old Trafford. But in truth, there are many different ballers who do such good things for their community and causes, and the Jermain Defoe documentary is one of those rare instances which actually focuses on that side of the game.

The high production quality enhances the viewing experience, with crisp visuals, dynamic editing, and a soundtrack that complements the highs and lows of Defoe’s journey.

A particular highlight of there Jermain Defoe documentary was his relationship with Sunderland supporter Bradley Lowery when he represented the club later in his career.

It was an incredibly heartwarming and heart wrenching aspect of the player’s life, which continues to be a part of it with the Foundation set up after he passed. But hearing directly from Bradley’s family and physically seeing Defoe talk about it is pretty amazing.

All in all, the Jermain Defoe documentary on Amazon Prime is a must-watch for football fans and anyone who loves a good underdog story. Unless you’re an Arsenal fan, obviously!
